Sorption of mercury from water by green synthesised silver nanoparticles supported on natural rubber latex/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibre
Finding a green approach for silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis and as an adsorbent for safe contaminant removal in water has become a challenge. In this study, AgNP were green synthesised into a biopolymer matrix (natural rubber latex/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA/NRL)) via electrospinning. Efficiency of the synthesised nanofibre composites in removing mercury (Hg) from an aqueous solution was examined. SEM and TEM analysis showed that AgNP were more visible on the fibre’s surface at a lower concentration (0.01 M AgNP), whilst at a higher concentration (0.015 M AgNP), relatively more AgNP were found within the fibre. We consider two rubidium atoms, prepared in the same S or P Rydberg states, near an optical nanofibre, and we determine their van der Waals interaction potential as a function of their separation along the nanofibre axis, their distance to the nanofibre axis, and their relative azimuthal angle. We compare results obtained through direct diagonalisation of the Hamiltonian (including quadrupolar interaction terms) with second-order perturbation calculations, and we identify which couplings mainly contribute to the potential in the presence of the nanofibre and in free-space. Enhancing Mechanical Properties and Flux of Nanofibre Membranes for Water Filtration
Nanofibres have gained attention for their highly porous structure, narrow pore size, and high specific surface area. One of the most efficient techniques for producing nanofibres is electrospinning. These fibres are used in various fields, including water filtration. Although they possess the ability to filter various components, the fibres generally have low mechanical strength, which can mitigate their performance over time. To address this, studies have focused on enhancing nanofibre membrane strength for water filtration. Previous analyses show that the mechanical properties of nanofibre mats can be improved through solvent vapour treatment, thermal treatment, and chemical crosslinking. 08/01/2023 -
Single-nanoparticle detection has received tremendous interest due to its significance in fundamental physics and biological applications. Here, we demonstrate an optical nanofibre-enabled microfluidic sensor for the detection and sizing of nanoparticles. Benefitting from the strong evanescent field outside the nanofibre, a nanoparticle close to the nanofibre can scatter a portion of the field energy to the environment, resulting in a decrease in the transmitted intensity of the nanofibre. On the other hand, the narrow and shallow microfluidic channel provides a femtoliter-scale detection region, making nanoparticles flow through the detection region one by one. 10/01/2023
